Learn how to respond to
the threat of Family Violence

What to do if you think that you could soon become
- or already are - a victim of domestic violence

Don't Ignore the problem - talk to someone right away.

Part of the abuser's power comes from secrecy. Victims are often ashamed to let anyone know about intimate family problems. Go to a friend or neighbor, or call a domestic violence hot line to speak with a counselor.

Plan ahead and know what you will do if you're attacked.

Learn to think independently, plan for the future and set goals for yourself. Choose a place to go if you need to leave. Set aside some money, and put important papers - marriage license, birth certificates, checkbooks - somewhere that you can get them quickly if needed.

Elder abuse is a crime that is committed every day

Most elder abuse is either unnoticed or goes unreported

This is largely due to individuals not recognizing the signs of abuse, not wanting to accept the fact that seniors are frequently victims of abuse, and being reluctant to report known or suspected abuse.

Elder abuse includes:

  • Physical abuse: slapping, pushing, beating or forced confinement
  • Mental abuse: treating an older person like a child, humiliating, insulting, frightening, threatening, or ignoring an older person
  • Financial abuse: stealing, fraud, extortion, or misuse of a power of attorney
  • Sexual abuse: sexual assault or any unwanted form of sexual activity
  • Neglect: a caregiver failing to give an older person food, medical attention, or other necessary care - or abandoning an older person in their care

A Home Security System can help prevent Elder Abuse.
