Cooking fires are the
Number One cause of home fires

Know what to do if
your meal bursts into flames

Once ignited, the intense fire will cause cooking oil to surge up and out of the pan almost instantly.

Overheated cooking oil will start to bubble or froth excessively and/or smoke. As the oil reaches its flash point of about 600°F., tiny wisps of fire will begin to leap from its surface. Once the temperature exceeds its fire point 700° F., its surface will begin vaporising and spontaneously ignite.

What to do if your cooking oil catches fire

NEVER PUT WATER ON A GREASE FIRE - Water causes the grease to splatter, spreading the fire to a larger area.

NEVER TRY TO MOVE A GREASE FIRE - It will be too hot to carry. If you drop it, the fire will splatter and spread - and turn into a major house fire.

If you notice your cooking oil starting to boil or bubble, remove it from the heat source immediately. Simply lowering the burner will not reduce the temperature quickly enough, especially on an electric stovetop.

The safest way to extinguish a grease fire is to turn off the burner, then carefully slide a lid over the pan. Keep the lid on until the pan cools completely.

If oil overflows from the pan and ignites, get everyone out of the home and call the fire department from outside.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Why do I need a home security system smoke alarm when I have a battery-operated smoke detector?"

A home security system smoke detector provides more protection than a "stand-alone" detector because it is monitored. This means that when smoke or excessive heat is detected, an alarm is sounded and a signal is sent to ADT's Customer Monitoring Center. An ADT professional can immediately alert both you and the police, fire department or emergency personnel - whether you are at home or not.
